Jan. 14 (Bloomberg) - Mizuho Financial Group Inc. is considering options to strengthen its capital, including what would be Japan's first rights issue, three people with knowledge of the matter said.
The country's third largest lender by market capitalization is in talks with investment banks about a possible sale of shares in the fiscal year that begins on 1 April, the people said, declining to be identified as the discussions are private. Mizuho gained 5.7 percent in Tokyo at its highest in three months.
The Tokyo Stock Exchange in December relaxed rules that complicate the sale of shares to existing shareholders, a method used by banks worldwide to raise a combined $ 60 billion last year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Mizuho and larger rivals Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. announced a share sale plans to raise 3.7 trillion yen (40 billion dollars) since December 2008.
